Janet M. Coffman, MPP, PhD

Associate Professor of Health Policy, University of California, San Francisco

Janet M. Coffman is an associate professor at Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, the Healthforce Center, and the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. She previously worked for UC Berkeley, the San Francisco Department of Public Health, and the US Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs. Professor Coffman has authored numerous publications on supply and demand for healthcare workers, geographic maldistribution, and strategies for improving racial/ethnic diversity among health professionals. Current projects include analyses of California’s current and future workforce in primary care and behavioral health and an evaluation of pilot projects that are testing new models for utilizing paramedics to fill gaps in health care systems in communities across California. Her other research interests include health care reform, access to care for vulnerable populations, and innovations in management of chronic illnesses. She teaches in the joint UCSF/UC-Hastings master’s degree program in health policy and law. Professor Coffman received a PhD in Health Services and Policy Analysis and a master’s degree in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley.
